In 2019, we will commemorate the 140th anniversary of the birth of Adamas Varnas, a prominent personality in the history of Lithuanian culture and education, an art teacher, photographer, collector, promoter and cherisher of folk art, stage designer, promoter of the Lithuanian language, and a renowned artist. Therefore, in 2019, the public will be presented with the exhibition “Adomas Varnas. A Life for Lithuania”.
At the end of the 20th century, the family’s legacy was returned to Lithuania from the United States by the will of Marija Varnienė. Some of the works of Adam Varnas were entrusted to the Lithuanian Museum of the History of Education for preservation.
Unfortunately, the condition of the drawings was poor, damaged by mould. In order to preserve Lithuania’s valuable cultural heritage, 10 drawings by Adamas Varnas were restored. These drawings will be exhibited in the forthcoming exhibition. The exhibition will be presented to the public in spring 2019. It is unique in that it will introduce the Lithuanian people to the comprehensive personality, work and social activities of Adam Varnas. He will be presented not only as an artist, but also as an educator, educational and cultural figure, photographer and promoter of the Lithuanian language. The exhibition will be exhibited not only in Kaunas, but also in other Lithuanian cities, so that the inhabitants of Lithuanian regions will be able to see the artist’s restored drawings.
The project was funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
The Museum is grateful to the restorer Daiva Snitkute, who brought these drawings back to life.
