It is important to emphasize that during the Soviet and Nazi occupations, the publication of literature was highly controlled, and much attention was paid to the censorship of compulsory literature and textbooks in educational institutions. During the period in question, the libraries of educational institutions and their collections were thoroughly checked, and some of them were closed due to improper storage of publications of the content. Not only pedagogical literature or textbooks, but also fiction for schoolage children did not escape control. The content of these works has been edited, strange, and it is not uncommon for the same works to be reprinted in several editions, supplementing them with illustrations by artists, graphic artists, and drawings.

The publishing of uncensored childrens literature was occupied by the Lithuanian diaspora who had left for the West. As early as 1945. The first childrens reading books were published in Germany, the first children‘s poetry and prose books were soon published, and since 1946 the publication of the childrens monthly magazine Saulutė has been restored.

In the summer of 1944, Povilas Osmolskis left for Germany and settled in the Würzburg refugee camp. While living in Germany, he was engaged in the illustration of children’s books and the satirical magazine “God’s Bird”.
