Exhibition “MOTHER AND CHILD“

On Mother’s Day Sunday, the Lithuanian Museum of Education, in collaboration with Lithuanian museums and artists representing contemporary art, presents the exhibition “Mother and Child”.

One of the most beautiful holidays in Lithuania, Mother’s Day, dates back to 1928. The initiators of this idea were members of the Lithuanian Catholic Women’s Association, who decided to dedicate the first Sunday in May to the celebration of the role and significance of mothers. The Mother’s Day celebration, which was established in the interwar years, has not lost its meaning to this day. Today, as it was nearly a hundred years ago, we associate the name of Mother with what is most precious and sacred – Mother Earth, Mother Motherland, Mother of God, and most importantly, Mother, who gave us life and who accompanies us through life.

The exhibition “Mother and Child” combines two essential elements – contemporary art and historical material from the interwar period – depicting the portrait of a woman as a mother, and highlighting the relationship and interconnectedness between mother and child.

In the artistic part of the exhibition, we present paintings, graphics and watercolours by six artists – Margarita Ado, Dalia Galminiene, Kristina Gedminaitė, Anastasia Janiukštė, Karolina Markauskienė and Austė Skardžiukaitė-Kabašinskienė. All of them are mothers, whose work presents the intimate and personal world of motherhood, the fragility and strength of the mother-child bond.

The historical part of the exhibition presents documentary material from the inter-war period – photographs, periodicals and literature – allowing a closer look at the social context of the time, the representations of motherhood and the relationship between mother and child.

Echoing the themes of motherhood and the mother-child relationship, the Lithuanian Museum of Education, together with the Kaunas City Centre for Social Services and other social partners, will invite the general public to various social initiatives during the period of the exhibition “Mother and Child”.

The exhibition will be open from 29 April 2025 to 28 June 2025 at the Lithuanian Museum of Education (Vytauto pr. 52, Kaunas).
